KMA's "Alive After Five"

Date: 07/09/2010 Time: 6:00 PM

Alive After Five is an early Friday evening program of live music which features dancing, food from a variety of area restaurants/caterers, two cash bars, and free freshly popped popcorn. The art galleries are open during the show, and there’s even a licensed therapeutic masseuse/masseur available for chair massages.

The summer series of Alive After Five premiers with a tropical theme, featuring the Carib Sounds Steel Band and food available from Afro-Caribbean Catering. With roots running deep into the Caribbean and branching out all over the world, steel drum music is a fresh sound that captivates audiences everywhere, and the Carib Sounds Steel Band is one of the best at delivering that sound. The musical arranger and director is Vere Henry from the Caribbean island of Antigua. He and fellow bandmember, Esmond Edwards, another native Antiguan, introduced steel drums to East Tennessee in 1982 when they played with The Gemonites Steel Orchestra and entertained millions at the World’s Fair in Knoxville. The music of Carib Sounds moves audiences into that “island attitude”, where they can almost feel the cool breeze of the tradewinds and the warmth of the white sandy beaches as they limbo to hot Calypso and Soca beats, rock to the pulsating rhythms of Reggae, and roll with Jimmy Buffet tunes and other tropical island-inspired music.

The summer series features the Alive After Five debuts of Pistol Creek Catch of the Day and Quartjar, as well as longtime favorites, Slow Blind Hill, Blue Mother Tupelo, and Sharon Mosby with the Wendel Werner Quintet. The series also includes CD release parties for new recordings by Soulfinger and Sanda Allyson, who will be accompanied by Grammy-nominee Donald Brown and his Quintet.

Admission to the spring premier of Alive After Five is $9 for general admission and $5 for museum members and college students with ID. Ages 17 and under are admitted free. Alive After Five is sponsored by Cherokee Distributing Company, Metro Pulse, and WDVX-89.9FM. For more information about the Alive After Five series, please contact Michael Gill at (865) 934-2039.
